Last Week

Presentations

I enjoyed all the presentations. Everyone worked so hard on them, and it was fun seeing the wide range of topics everyone chose. My favorite was Daniels (aka that other TA). I liked how he started to mix both the YouTube 'Eye of the Tiger' clip and 'Vestigial Nipples' together. I love psychedelic music and it was very surreal to listen to. Does anyone know if he is going to post it somewhere or where I could find it? Great job everyone!

Final Project

Everyone's presentations in class looked fantastic. I was truely impressed.

I am making steady progress on my Final Project. I have finished all the maps, most of the enemies, half the items, and all of the scenes except for the last half of the final scene. Everything is looking good.

Week 6 - Streaming and Podcasting

I thought the podcasting stuff was useful. I am well on my way to getting the podcast to work. I'm hoping I can make it all professional with iTunes and such. We'll see how much time I have to get all that working.

The streaming stuff was interesting but I think a little more than what I need for my project. I hate real player though. No one use it, I hope it burns! I takes over your computer and never lets go. Never ever ever install it! It never goes away! I has pop-up ads all day long! Arg!

Last entry

Props to everyone who presented, you all did a really good job. I liked the TA's presentation a lot, that was hilarious. Solid presentations from everyone and a good way to close out the quarter.
thought my last blog should praise everyone that presented. everyone's work was fabulous and i was truly impressed. well done!

good luck on finals,
-alana zimmer.

Last Class

I just wanted to say I thought Mark's presentation on using sound to control video games was one of the most interesting and exciting things i've seen all quarter. I'd be curious to see how much further that idea could be taken. I'm currently working on my content creation, can't wait for everything to be over though.

Final Week of Class

I just wanted to comment on this weeks performances. I was very impressed with them all, a couple of items I thought that were done especially well was the utilization of garage band, the podcasting, the circuit bending and especially the TA's projects. Very nicely done.

Student Presenters

Today we had the in class student presenters present their projects. I thought all the projects and performances were really good. You can really tell that they worked really hard on their projects and that they spent a lot of time and practice on it. I really liked Adam’s group because they sounded really good together, although in the first song we couldn’t really hear the bass. It’s amazing to me that a group of people can just get together and jam and make something nice like this.

I also really liked Marc’s demonstration on Mario Brothers. I thought it was a really creative idea and it also seems really fun to do. You get to sing, play video games, and interact with a lot of people. This is something that I’ve never seen and I think this could be something fun and new to video game development. I think this would be a good idea if they could apply this to other games. It would be a break through for games and I think it could be very popular.

Today's Presentations/ Last Day of Class! :)

The Presentations today, once again, were great!!!

Ian, Danny, and Ross--
The Slugcast podcast is a great idea and I'm sure your site will only grow and mature into a fully operable podcast (I know it is now, but once you add more shows......) I hope you keep attending to it and I'm thinking about subscribing to it myself!! That was a great idea and I think you guys did an awesome presentation! I also think it is great that you used Garageband AND Audacity to edit and enhance your audio. Great job!

Louie, Jonah, and Kevin--
Your Deaftones-Adaptors audio sounded great! You had a great explanation with your "ghetto" way of accomplishing an awesome sound! I'm sure a great deal of effort went into this project.... and I applaud you-- I acctually learned alot from your presentation! :)

John--
First of all-- it takes a lot of guts to go up and present infront of the whole class by yourself, I applaud you on that! :) Your explanation of the bitrate peeling (which I have never heard of until your presentation today) was very informative and interesting. I fully enjoyed your explanations and presentation of this topic.

Scott--
While your song was very unique, I thought your explanations of your use of Garageband showed that you worked very hard on this project and it was successful! Good job!

Brandon--
I love the fact that you used a drum sample from youtube to make your own music.... AWESOME!

Daniel--
When you first talked about your vigistial (spelled right?) nipples project I imagined something TOTALLY different than what you presented today! While it differed greatly, I enjoyed the message you were trying to say and your presentation as well... :)

Jennifer--
I'm sad that we didn't get to see your website, but I'm sure it is great! :)

The last group--
Sorry, I don't know all the names of the participants in this group and was not able to stay for the full presentation, but the setup displayed looked very complicated and from what I did hear, you guys spent a lot of time and put a lot of effort into your project. It looked very complicated but the first beats you were playing sounded great.... I wish I could have stayed for the explanation of how you acheived that with the materials you were using (the boxes and wires).

I think everyone did a great job!!

In conclusion, I would just like to comment that what I got out of this course was completely different than what I expected I would. I learned so much and Cynthia is a great instuctor and I'm a little sad that today was our last class :(

Well I wish you all the best of luck in your studies and good job again to all the presenters this week!

Final Presentations

I've really enjoyed peoples final presentations over the last two days. I've been impressed by the talent of all the different musicians, and the diversity of the projects. I'm looking forward to getting a copy of the Super Mario music game, and using SlugCast. I also want to thank you for letting Brice, Kevin and I have some extra time to get our gear set up to perform. It's too bad that our set up was having problems, but we know how to play our music in the studio, so the recording of that should work out.

Final Presentations

I have really enjoyed the final presentations in class this week. It was really cool to have live music in a class. I wish more classes were like this. I was especially impressed with Mark's work on the Mario emulator. That was a really cool project, and I bet one day that concept could really turn into something big.

Last Week!

Well, that went quick. Guess it's time for finals and such now. Anyway, everyone's projects were great. I liked listening to them all and seeing how much work everyone put in. It's nice to see that most people went above and beyond the requirements and actually did something original and interesting.

I thought my groups went pretty well. We worked really hard on it and I hope that came across. Anyone who is still interested after seeing our demo should check out our site at SlugCast.com!

Thanks Everyone!
-Danny Key

My Final Project

For my final project i created a song using garage band. This was the first time iv used garage band before and i was amazed at how much i enjoyed creating a song from bits and loops of music. My song started out with a rock like sound then moved into hip-hop and ended with techno. I really liked the outcome of my project.

Last Day of Class

So I just came back from the last day of class and I must say we had alot of talented kids in our class. I am really glad I took this course because it expanded my knowledge about music on the internet. The presentation were wonderful and entertaining. My favorite was the nipple song. Just want to say thanks to everyone who made this class a wonderful experience! Thank You!

Presentations

I really liked the podcast presentation we just had in class. The website itself is well designed, and I like how there are embedded music players on the site instead of doing everything through iTunes. Well done! Also, does anyone know if we can work collaboratively on a musical piece for the final project? Best of luck to everyone on their final projects and surviving finals week!

Wrapping up.

As the class is wrapping up I've been impressed by what the presenters are managing, as I can only imagine that practice that went into a lot of it. With the Live Music presentations, it was sort of refreshing to come out of my digital music sphere to see what people can do with real instruments.

I haven't really seen people going with the whole GarageBand or Fruity Loops route, which sort of surprised me as a lot of the class emphasis. Today's presentation that included the Pod Cast was quite impressive and I really thought it culminated what the class "Music and the WWW" was all about.

Admittedly I'm still trying to wrap up my final project and thus would never really consider presenting, so I must applaud all those who have gotten their ducks in a row quite so early.

Final Presentations

I just wanted to comment that the presentations on Tuesday were quite good. The live band was very good musically but I enjoyed the second performer because he added some singing too. The mario done by music was also an enjoyment and I can't wait for the other presentations on Thursday!

RE: Final Project Update!

Yeah I thought the same thing!!! I'm doing the research paper so I was freaking out about getting it done by Thursday--- but come to find out~not due until Tuesday!!! BIG RELIEF!!! lol :)

Tuesday's Performances

I really really enjoyed all the performances on Tuesday! They all were SO good!

The first band sounded great; David, Amy, Lee, and I can't remember the fourth person's name; GREAT JOB!!! You were all synchronized and your performance was very impressive.

PETER- Oh-my-god! Your performance was also amazing--- it took a lot of guts to get up on that huge stage by yourself infront of the whole class. I applaud you. You are a great guitar player and I also fully enjoyed your lyrics---Very very nice!! :)

Mark- That video you showed about your mario project thing was crazy! I never knew something to that extent could be acheived! I applaud you as well and I would love to play your version of Mario someday! :P

Daniel-- I agree what you said about the man nipples! lol... Hopefully we will all see your work tomorrow about it.

Everyone did really great and I can't wait to see what's in store for tomorrow

Until then.....

Final Project Update!

So everyone remember how the final project's due anytime between today and the 18th? Yeah, I thought it was due (by the latest) today. So I freaked out and finished it this past weekend - and ran to the bookstore twenty minutes before closing to buy blank CDs.

Well, I guess now I have time to fine-tune my project. Yippee!

Last Post

I guess this'll be my last post since it's the end of the quarter. I just want to say that i totally enjoy the days that are like show and tell. Everyone that presented did a good job.

Furthermore, I'm simply doing another HTML for my final project in which i will embed a song i created using GarageBand. It's fairly beginner-style, but i'm definitely proud of myself. I definitely have skills i didn't have upon entering this class. To me, that is cool.

Final project presentations

I enjoyed the presentations in class today. While I don't want to gloss over the performers (thank you and good job!) the video presentation by Mark was interesting. The concept of new input controls for everything amazes me with the possibilities of the technology. For all of those who have gotten wrist cramps from video games, the idea of an alternative control method would be welcome.

Final Project progress

I've made some progress with my final project this last week; I've recorded some more sound clips, done a bit of editing on them, and have imported them to garageband so I can work on creating a multi-track recording. So far I've got the guitar intro and the rhythm section for the whole song--drums, bass, and rhythm guitar--and I'm writing a guitar solo now. It has actually been pretty fun, and it's made me finally learn how to record and use the tools that have always been available to me.

Flash/Quiz

Thank you so much for bringing in the guy(I've forgotten his name) to talk about flash, I thought it was very informative and helpful even though I won't be using it in my final project I will use it in the future. The quiz was also a much better overview of what we have learned so far and it will much more accurately judge our knowledge and comprehension of the course material.

--Matthew Felton

Quiz+Guest

I think the quiz scores will be a lot more accurate this time, since it was longer than the last quiz. Thank you very much for lenghtening it! :)
Khazar(hope I spelled that right)'s flash demo was good this time as well as last, I just wish he hadn't used the same sound file (glide) again. I was getting very tired of it by the end of the lecture. I kind of felt like he was losing focus towards the end of the lecture too, what with not knowing the names over certain functions/where buttons were and what not. Thats okay though, since he covered the most important stuff first.
I've started my final project, I just hope its not too bland. I'm using a lot of classical instruments and hopefully towards the end I'll be adding some electronic noises but...I've never composed a song before so I just hope it turns out well.

Help on final project?

Hey, I was wondering if anyone here knew how to get around websites that didn't particularly want you to get sound clips from them, or just for some reason it was just not easily downloadable for whatever reason. For example, some websites have embedded background music which has no link or anything to be able to download it. If anyone knows easy methods to capture audio off the web that would be great!!! Thanks!

-Brandon C.

RE: MIDI

I have to agree that the MIDI did totally make the led zep song sound really artificial. It seems like it's not really that needed today; kind of an outdated technology because all the new devices have so much memory that you might as well have the actual song there. It is kind of amusing to see the retro technology in action though.

Also, I was really a lot more comfortable with the second quiz; I felt that it was more comprehensive than the last one and I was really relieved.

3/6

This quiz was a lot better than the first quiz. I think the new 25% and 10% grading of the quizzes sounds okay. But 35% total still seems like a lot.
I am currently working on my final project. I am doing the content creation, and I am in the process of adapting downloaded material and adding my own tracks. So far, I'm having a lot of fun doing the final project, though it's a lot more work then I thought it would be.

MIDI

I have to say that from the lectures where we've discussed MIDI, I am not a big fan of it.  The sounds made by the program that a MIDI controller would run through sound very artificial and, to me, not very musical.  I understand how it could be used for certain kinds of electronica music and experimental music, but personally I'm not really into either.  The version of Kashmir by Led Zeppelin in MIDI was almost embarrassing because of the horrible sound quality compared to the real song.  Basically, I just don't think that real songs should be converted into MIDI unless you want to use it as a polyphonic ringtone for an older cell phone.  I think I'm going to stick to the regular instrument and recording techniques, seems more authentic to me.

Blog

This last week was pretty good.  Having Mr. Khazar come back was very helpful, even though I am not using Flash for my final project. I may use it in the future so it was good to get information about it.

The quiz was also better than the last one, though I suppose since it included the entire last quiz this was pretty much a given.  Having a little more room to get questions wrong is always good, though I thought they were okay questions and were not that difficult to answer.

Patapon

I may be stretching the connection between the Internet and video games, but I've been playing this game called Patapon, where you command an army of tribal cyclops through a journey back to their ancestral home. The game is rhythm based and has RPG and god game elements as well. You control the Patapons by rhythmic drums and playing certain patterns. The offical site is a great example of flash and music design on the web. You can get a taste of the game play in your browser.
http://www.us.playstation.com/Patapon/
It's a really fun and unique game, and if anyone has a PSP I highly recommend it.

RE: Check this out!

That is an awesome link--- very fun to play with!!! :)

RE:Calculation of Quiz Scores to Synthia

Synthia-- I think that is a great idea! :) I hope you had a great weekend.

Bloggity-Blog

I just wanted to post a few comments about this course. When I first signed up for this class, I thought it would be like learning how to download music. Then when I attended the first few classes, I realized that the course was TOTALLY different than what I had previously imagined---and kind of got a little "gunshy" because I had NO idea about all the different formats and processes that went into Music on the Internet. But after learning the material, and helpful assistance from Synthia, I have learned a great deal than I ever imagined I would from this course.

I am very glad I took this course as it has opened my eyes to a whole new world of knowledge and material I had never been exposed to before!!

Now to work on the final project.... argh! grrr.... lol jk

Good luck on all of your projects and I will see you all in class!
